The merit badge counselor is a key player in the Boy Scout advancement program. Whatever your area of expertise or interest—whether it is a special craft or hobby (basketry, leatherwork, coin collecting), a profession (veterinary medicine, law, aviation, engineering), or perhaps a life skill (cooking, personal management, communications)—as a merit badge counselor, you can play a vital role in stirring a Scout’s curiosity about that particular topic. By serving as a merit badge counselor, you offer your time, knowledge, and other resources so that Scouts can explore a topic of interest. As a merit badge counselor, your mission is to join fun with learning. You are both a teacher and mentor as the Scout works on a merit badge and learns by doing. Your hands-on involvement could inspire a Scout to develop a lifelong hobby, pursue a particular career, or become an independent, self-supporting adult. You CANNOT be a Merit Badge counselor for your own Scout.

Though, you can be a Merit Badge (MB) Counselor for multiple MBs. There are 3 steps/requirements to be a MB Counselor:

1. Complete an adult BSA application – http://www.scouting.org/filestore/pdf/524-501.pdf

2. Complete Youth Protection Training – http://www.pacsky.org/Training/Adult/Youth-Protection-Guide

3. Complete Merit Badge Counselor Training (classroom style for 1-hour)

Scout Merit Badge Requirements by Rank:

Trail to First Class ranks (Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class & First Class) do not have any merit badge requirements. However, earning merit badges during this time will help them qualify for their Star Rank Requirements.

STAR: 6 Total Merit Badges with 4 being Eagle Merit Badges (pamphlet is silver/grey and there are 17 defined Eagle Merit Badges).

LIFE: 11 Total Merit Badges – 6 previously earned from Star and 5 new ones with at least 3 of the 5 being Eagle Merit Badges.

EAGLE: 21 Total Merit Badges – 11 previously earned from Life and 10 new ones with at least 13 of the total being Eagle Merit Badges.

A list of all merit badges and their detailed requirements can be found here:
